Fire Department Stages Water Rescue

With hundreds of firefighters from across New York in town this week, the Rochester Fire Department put on a bit of a show Thursday.

That show drew a crowd to the Main Street Bridge downtown around midday. The RFD sent its Swiftwater Rescue Team onto the river to demonstrate how they rescue a person in distress on the fast-moving Genesee.

Crews chased down a floating mannequin and brought it back to shore.

"Anytime you can see others performing you can pick something up. And it's good training environment and in a convention of this nature, you're bringing from all walks of the state together. So everybody gains through something like this," said Capt. Bob Duemmel of the Rochester Fire Department.

An RFD rescue team also staged at the Andrews Street Bridge an eighth of a mile up river as a precaution because of the Genesee's swift current.
